Aloha,
The Trans Pacific Marine Debris Survey is a citizen science initiative based in Hawai‘i. Since 2009, volunteer sailors with Pacific Cup and Transpac Yacht Races have been recording visual observations of marine debris between the main Hawaiian Islands and the Continental West Coast.
TPMDS has recorded thousands of sightings of MD. This project is the world's longest running collection of at-sea macroplastic (greater than 50mm) data. It has been used to estimate the world's total amount of plastic afloat at sea. TPMDS is also a member of the HI Marine Debris Action Plan Research Group. A workshop was held in 2017 to discuss research priorities for the state. |
